9:00- Enter the museum as a group

Lunch Information:
We will have 30-45 minutes for lunch. You will need to pack a lunch or order from the Mars Grill. If you bring something from another restuarant, it will need to be in an unmarked bag. (no logos, etc). NO PEANUTS OR NUTS.
We will tour all exhibits. There will also be hands on activities available through out the museum.
This trip is part of our community helpers series. While all ages are welcome to attend it is geared to Prek-2nd grade.
Haleyville Public Library

We will meet beside the library at 1:15 and enter as a group.
We will visit the library and learn how to take care of the books. They will talk to us about getting a library card (must be 5 years old) and how to find a book we are looking for.
If your child wishes to get a library card, you will need to be a resident of Haleyville and need to have proof of address (a bill or even junk mail with your name and address is usually sufficient.) If you are not a resident of Haleyville, but Haleyville is the closest library to you, you may qualify as well. The librarian will have more information on that.

Students will have the opportunity to see demonstrations of infantry, cavalry, and artillery! They will also have the opportunity to participate in drill activities and learn about Civil War soldiers’ flags and uniforms, what soldiers carried in the field, and how they ate.
We will also attend the homeschool program scheduled for 1:30 that day.

Golden Flake Tour Rules
TO ENSURE YOUR SAFETY AND OUR MANUFACTURING INTEGRITY, THE FOLLOWING RULES MUST BE FOLLOWED:
Welcome to Golden Flake. To help guarantee that we maintain the integrity of our products and to comply with Federal and the State of Alabama laws and regulations, we require that you read and agree to follow the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) listed below while you are in our plant:
1. Watches and all jewelry shall be removed (Plain wedding bands and medic alert items are exempt).
2. Closed toed and closed heel shoes must be worn. Tennis shoes are preferred. Absolutely no beach shoes, sandals, flip flops, or minimalist shoes.
3. Hairnets and beard nets shall be properly worn at all times. We will provide you with these nets. Hats are not permitted.
4. All tour participants must be 5 years of age or older. No cameras or video recorders (including phones) of any kind are allowed in the manufacturing areas.
5. Gum, candy, external food and drink are not allowed.
6. Tobacco use, in any form, is not allowed in the production facility. Smoking is allowed only in designated smoking areas.
7. Personal belongings, such as backpacks, purses and briefcases, are not allowed on the tour. Please secure these items in your vehicle.
8. Firearms or other weapons are not allowed.
9. Illegal drugs or substances are not allowed in or around our facilities.
10. Alcohol consumption is not allowed in or around our facilities.
11. Manufacturing areas can be hazardous. Please be aware of slippery floors and vehicle traffic. Avoid chemical storage areas and remain with a Golden Flake employee throughout your entire visit.
12. School Field Trip reservations will open on September 1 of each year. Please call early in the school year as our tour is very popular and fills quickly.
13. Our tour is wheelchair accessible.
14. Notice: Allergens are present! While we sell and distribute packaged peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds and other nut items, No nut items are processed here. However we have seasonings in the manufacturing process that include, but not limited to, milk, soy, and wheat are present in this facility. Those individuals that have allergic reactions to these items may want to consider just viewing our introductory video that shows the production process prior to the tour. These individuals must have their own supervision while others are on the tour.

Constitution Village: Becoming Alabama
The Debate for our State
In the summer of 1819 forty-four delegates gathered here to form the 22nd state admitted to the Union - ALABAMA! Join us at the Alabama Constitution Village for this unique, guided tour which allows your students to follow in the footsteps of the delegates, engage in the processes of constitutional debate, witness the formation of a state and explore Alabama's rich history. As they travel through the Village, students are encouraged to participate in our dramatic presentations, assist John Boardman as he prints the weekly edition of the newspaper on a 19th century printing press, add their initials to a proclamation document with a quill pen and check the “general delivery” box to see if they have mail in the Post Office. While in the Constitution Hall students may be able to convince the “serving girl” to tell them a little gossip about the delegates she overheard while performing her duties. They will encounter historic interpreter Mrs. Leroy Pope and be taught proper 19th-century etiquette. The birth of the state of Alabama moves out of history books and comes alive in this exciting, powerful program! Program length: approximately 2 hours.
Early Works Children Museum: Amazing Americans
Join us on this fun, educational guided tour of U.S. history! Through the many stations of this program your students will learn to read braille at our Helen Keller exhibit, dress up as presidents and explore the keelboat. Find out which president was a big game hunter, and which one got stuck in the bathtub by exploring the Hall of Presidents! Quiz games about our Amazing Americans mural will engage students to learn about famous Americans such as Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson. Best of all, throughout your trip your students can visit with historical interpreters.
Train Depot: Civil War Kids Encampment
Travel back in time to the 1860's and experience life as a Civil War soldier. Join us at the Historic Huntsville Depot for one of the most incredible hands-on programs offered on the Civil War. Students are engaged in marching drills, battlefield surgery techniques, haversack inspections, war map reading and camp style cooking. Costumed interpreters will be on hand to share their knowledge of the Civil War as you and your students move between each learning station. The 2 hour program is completely hands-on and has been designed to immerse your students in the experience of life as a soldier.

We are taking our annual spring hike!
For this trip we will meet up at the Warrior Mountains Trading Company at 11312 AL Hwy. 33, Moulton, AL and then travel to our destination as this one is more difficult to find.
We will meet at 9am. We will depart to drive to our location at 9:15. Do NOT be late as we will depart without you.
In case of rain on April 26, the trip will move to April 28 with all other information the same.
This is a hiking trip, not a walk through the park. While most trails are easy to follow you will need good walking shoes. Dress in layers. Once we are down in the woods, it can feel much cooler. It will probably be wet. There will be streams to cross and if its been raining, it can be muddy. If you have "puddle jumpers" you will need to bring extra clothes.
EACH PERSON will need to have a backpack with water and snacks. We will be eating on the trail, so make sure you pack your lunch.
This trip will be approximately 4 miles round trip. Most of the trail is relatively flat.
Be prepared for creek crossings and getting feet in water. Make sure footwear is suitable for wet conditions. Rubber boots are NOT recommended; wool socks are. A portion of this hike is off trail and fairly rugged and steep.
Be prepared for wet, slippery terrain and rocks, some steep climbing. Wear sturdy footwear with good traction. Long pants are recommended.
So, why is it called Indian Tomb Hollow? From what I understand, this area was the site of several significant Indian battles and there are numerous areas sacred within this small valley. During one battle, so many Indians were killed on both sides that the bodies were thrown into some sinks located nearby – so the name Indian Tomb Hollow was given. This area was also owned and farmed by the Gillespie family – some of which inter-married with the Native Americans from my understanding. The Gillespie homestead was located atop High House Hill.

Welcome to the Grotto
Known throughout the world as "Jerusalem in Miniature," is a beautifully landscaped, four-acre park designed to provide a natural setting for the 125 miniature reproductions of some of the most famous historic buildings and shrines of the world. The masterpieces of stone and concrete are the lifetime work of Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Benedictine monk of St. Bernard Abbey. Begun as a hobby, with various materials he could find, and infinite patience and a remarkable sense of symmetry and proportion, Brother Joseph re-created some of the greatest edifices of all time.
Cullman County Museum

Clarkson Covered Bridge
One of Cullman's most well known attractions and historically rich sites, Clarkson Covered Bridge, originally built in 1904, and was once used regularly by farmers and travelers to cross Crooked Creek, the weatherworn bridge is now closed to traffic, the centerpiece of a park built in period fashion to showcase the bridge and its historical significance. The bridge was torn in two, in 1921 by a huge storm. One piece was left intact, the other swept down stream and soon salvaged. One year later, the project to repair the bridge with the salvaged material was completed.
Grist Mill at Clarkson Covered Bridge
On June 25, 1974, Clarkson Covered Bridge was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Shortly thereafter, in 1975, the Cullman County Commission restored the site with the help of concerned citizens as part of the American Bicentennial Project, embellishing the grounds with hiking trails, a picnic area, and two period structures built to accent the historical nature of the bridge: a Dogtrot log cabin and a working grist mill.
Crooked Creek Civil War Museum
The Crooked Creek Civil War museum is home to a host of Civil War memorabilia. Located on a battle site from the war, the area's rich history and heritage has afforded it an abundance of character. With over 40 acres of land with historical significance, a museum of rare collectibles where you can actually handle the artifacts, and a quaint bed & breakfast on the property, this attraction will ensure that you receive a remarkable history lesson coupled with fun.

EACH PERSON will need to have a backpack with water and snacks. We will be eating on the trail, so make sure you pack your lunch.
This trip will be approximately 4 miles round trip. Most of the trail is relatively flat.
Be prepared for creek crossings and getting feet in water. Make sure footwear is suitable for wet conditions. Rubber boots are NOT recommended; wool socks are. A portion of this hike is off trail and fairly rugged and steep.
Be prepared for wet, slippery terrain and rocks, some steep climbing. Wear sturdy footwear with good traction. Long pants are recommended.
So, why is it called Indian Tomb Hollow? From what I understand, this area was the site of several significant Indian battles and there are numerous areas sacred within this small valley. During one battle, so many Indians were killed on both sides that the bodies were thrown into some sinks located nearby – so the name Indian Tomb Hollow was given. This area was also owned and farmed by the Gillespie family – some of which inter-married with the Native Americans from my understanding. The Gillespie homestead was located atop High House Hill.

Known throughout the world as "Jerusalem in Miniature," is a beautifully landscaped, four-acre park designed to provide a natural setting for the 125 miniature reproductions of some of the most famous historic buildings and shrines of the world. The masterpieces of stone and concrete are the lifetime work of Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Benedictine monk of St. Bernard Abbey. Begun as a hobby, with various materials he could find, and infinite patience and a remarkable sense of symmetry and proportion, Brother Joseph re-created some of the greatest edifices of all time.

Clarkson Covered Bridge
One of Cullman's most well known attractions and historically rich sites, Clarkson Covered Bridge, originally built in 1904, and was once used regularly by farmers and travelers to cross Crooked Creek, the weatherworn bridge is now closed to traffic, the centerpiece of a park built in period fashion to showcase the bridge and its historical significance. The bridge was torn in two, in 1921 by a huge storm. One piece was left intact, the other swept down stream and soon salvaged. One year later, the project to repair the bridge with the salvaged material was completed.

On June 25, 1974, Clarkson Covered Bridge was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Shortly thereafter, in 1975, the Cullman County Commission restored the site with the help of concerned citizens as part of the American Bicentennial Project, embellishing the grounds with hiking trails, a picnic area, and two period structures built to accent the historical nature of the bridge: a Dogtrot log cabin and a working grist mill.

The Crooked Creek Civil War museum is home to a host of Civil War memorabilia. Located on a battle site from the war, the area's rich history and heritage has afforded it an abundance of character. Welcome to Golden Flake. To help guarantee that we maintain the integrity of our products and to comply with Federal and the State of Alabama laws and regulations, we require that you read and agree to follow the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) listed below while you are in our plant:
1. Watches and all jewelry shall be removed (Plain wedding bands and medic alert items are exempt).
2. Closed toed and closed heel shoes must be worn. Tennis shoes are preferred. Absolutely no beach shoes, sandals, flip flops, or minimalist shoes.
3. Hairnets and beard nets shall be properly worn at all times. We will provide you with these nets. Hats are not permitted.
4. All tour participants must be 5 years of age or older. No cameras or video recorders (including phones) of any kind are allowed in the manufacturing areas.
5. Gum, candy, external food and drink are not allowed.
6. Tobacco use, in any form, is not allowed in the production facility. Smoking is allowed only in designated smoking areas.
7. Personal belongings, such as backpacks, purses and briefcases, are not allowed on the tour. Please secure these items in your vehicle.
8. Firearms or other weapons are not allowed.
9. Illegal drugs or substances are not allowed in or around our facilities.
10. Alcohol consumption is not allowed in or around our facilities.
11. Manufacturing areas can be hazardous. Please be aware of slippery floors and vehicle traffic. Avoid chemical storage areas and remain with a Golden Flake employee throughout your entire visit.
12. School Field Trip reservations will open on September 1 of each year. Please call early in the school year as our tour is very popular and fills quickly.
13. Our tour is wheelchair accessible.
14. Notice: Allergens are present! While we sell and distribute packaged peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds and other nut items, No nut items are processed here. However we have seasonings in the manufacturing process that include, but not limited to, milk, soy, and wheat are present in this facility. Those individuals that have allergic reactions to these items may want to consider just viewing our introductory video that shows the production process prior to the tour. These individuals must have their own supervision while others are on the tour.

We are a part of Marion County 4H. Students will need to reenroll in 4H each year after August 1. This must be done online through Alabama 4H Online. We also need paper copies of the forms to keep on file.

Field Trip Shirts
Shirts are $7 and can be ordered in any size. All orders must be prepaid. Shirts will be orange with the NHCH logo on the pocket area (the same as in years past.)
History Fair
October 24. Our annual history fair will be on October 24 during coop hours. Rules and information can be found here: History Fair 2016
Coop
Coop classes are full! We have a great group of kids this year and are looking forward to another great coop year!
Our Pre-K class will have a series of field trips called "Visit a ...." as part of the community helpers class. These trips are open to any homeschooler even if you are not participating in coop, however please keep in mind they are geared to Prek-2nd grade.
4H
We are a part of Marion County 4H. Students will need to reenroll in 4H each year after August 1. This must be done online through Alabama 4H Online. We also need paper copies of the forms to keep on file.

Important Announcments
Hello. I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday weekend. Now that the 4th is over, the next big thing on my calendar is the 1st day of school!
First of all. We have a LOT of progress reports missing. We will be contacting everyone over the next week. If you are sending it in with your enrollment forms, that's fine. But we will still be contacting you if you haven't sent it in. If you don't hear from us, then your good. We appreciate everyone who got theirs in on time. It makes our job easier.
Regular office hours will resume in August. They will be every Monday from 9-1 (during co-op hours). If you need anything, this is the best time to reach us. If we don't answer, leave a message. We will return calls asap. Please remember that we have moved to New Prospect Baptist Church. Our cover church is still New Hope, but we simply out grew the space available to us and New Prospect offered a location for us. We will have our office and co-op at New Prospect.
If you have been wondering if co-op will be a good option for your family, we invite you to stop by our open house on Friday, August 12 at 5-7:00 pm. You can talk with the teachers, see where your classes will be and take care of enrollment and other paperwork that night. We understand that a lot of you are new to this adventure and aren't even sure what co-op is. We encourage you to come to our open house, but you may also come the first day to see if you will like the classes.
Anyone attending co-op: We will have a mandatory co-op orientation on August 15 at 9:00. We will not have our normal opening Bible lesson. We will be going over co-op information and new building rules. We are in a new location which means a few changes for us.
Co-op teachers: Open house is a mandatory workday for all teachers and co-teachers. This will give you an opportunity to set up your classroom and prepare it for the first day.
We have already begun planning field trips for next year! We have several big ideas but we are always open to suggestions from our families!

Field Trip- Geocaching Class
Geocaching Class
Monday September 19 at 1:00 pm at New Prospect Baptist Church (where we have co-op).
This class is for students 3rd grade and up.
There is a maximum of 20 students for this class.
Cost for this class will be $5 per student. There is no charge for adults.
Deadline to sign up will be September 5.
This class is open to all homeschoolers however you MUST sign up. You are not signed up unless you have emailed us at newhopechristianhomeschool
About the class:
This will be a beginners guide to geocaching taught by an experienced volunteer from the community.
We will cover:
How to read a gps.
How to find caches.
Respecting the caches.
We will have a time in the classroom to cover the basics of gps. We will then head out side where we will find "caches" that have been hidden in the area.
This class will be followed by a geocaching trip at a later date.
What is geocaching?
Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.
This class will be after co-op ends. If you will be attending co-op, you may bring a lunch to eat after co-op ends before the class begins.
